the outputs.

In Portugal, Agrupamento de Escolas de Penalva do Castelo held the Multiplier Event on June 2 at Espaço de Juventude do
Fontelo, in Viseu, with the participation of several English teachers.
The main output of this project was the creation of a platform to support English teachers in the assessment process. In
addition to providing various materials and exams covering all communicative skills, the Online Exam Creator platform
features an exam generator and other tools for creating fun activities.

Kick-off meeting of the European project ASSESS focused on the innovation of assessment techniques in English as Foreign Language

The transnational kick-off meeting of the Erasmus+ project KA2 ASSESS took place on the 13th and 14th of February in Viseu, Portugal. The aim of this project is innovating the assessment techniques in English during Primary Education by producing an online test creator that will allow teachers to download materials to evaluate English as a Foreign Language.

This project is formed by a partnership of six countries: Agrupamento de Escolas de Penalva do Castelo (Portugal), Learnmera Oy (Finland), Inercia Digital S.L. (Spain), Bursa Eğitim ve Gençlik Derneği (Turkey), ACTION SYNERGY SA (Greece) and Education Mobility Grid (Germany). Some of these countries are known for their good teaching techniques of foreign languages.

The reason why this project was created is the poor effectiveness of traditional assessments techniques, such as paper and pencil tests, in reflecting students’ learning potential. They result in a lack of the communicative proficiency that is essential for language skills.

Four main targets are established:

  1.   Effective teaching and assessment methods of foreign languages by using ICT.
  2.   Choice of quality products in language assessment, identifying the best way of responding to teaching needs.
  3.   Use of available products either as an alternative or as an integration to traditional tools.
  4.   Creation of new educational and training products that exploit the new technologies’ potential.

Four products will be implemented to achieve these objectives: a report of the curriculum of teaching English as foreign language in the different countries, a database for the online test maker, an online test maker, an assessment scale and a guide for teachers.

It is expected that the products of the project remain as a tool for improving the assessment methods and techniques for the student body in Primary Education.
